Another Challenge

My cousin has been diagnoised with breast cancer. (Her younger sister went through the same thing a few years ago.) She opted to a masectomy on Tuesday. She was given the option of just a lumpectomy and radiation every day for 6 weeks. Since her lymph nodes are not infected, it looks like she will not have to do any radiation or chemo. She will just have to watch and be faithful with the mammograms. She was very lucky. She had put off her annual mammogram for 6 months. The lump they found was very, very small. If she had the mommogram at her usual time it would probably not have been found, and would have had a year to grow. What a blessing for her.
It is just scary with the cancer in our family now. Mom, and two female cousins on the same side. Another reason to be regular with checkups.

Hope you read my email. I think it was a blessing that I got the opportunity to work where I work now because of what is going on with the Olsen side of the family. It really hits home! Yes the tests are expensive, but if it happens to be the same cancer gene that carole and jan have, then other members of the family can just be tested for THAT specific gene and it is a lot cheaper. So like I said, have them at least talk to their doctor about our tests.. www.myriadtests.com being in that small of area, they most likely don't know about Myriad and what we are here for. I know it scares me, because I would like to know if I carry that cancer gene.. But I need to know if there is anyone on OUR side that has it, because we can't test grandma.

When I talked with Jan yesterday she said the three sisters decided to do testing for their daughters sakes, but that means just Liza and Michelle, but then their daughters, too, which still isn't very many. Maybe if we find they have the gene then we can think of testing. But be sure to get your mammograms when you are old enough. Time to schedule mine.
